FOODCARBON
renewable energies for the decarbonisation of the meat sector

The FoodCarbon project aims to research and apply emerging technologies (Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence) together with renewable energy sources for the decarbonisation of industrial processes in the Asturian meat sector. The agri-food industry is responsible for one third of global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. For this reason, this project takes as a reference the production process of chorizo in the pilot plant (Living Lab) of the ASINCAR technology centre. The project’s approach is based on the quantification of emissions, their subsequent tokenisation and the optimisation of consumption through AI algorithms, creating a real and transparent technological alternative against "greenwashing".

Challenges
Accurately and automatically calculate the carbon emissions associated with a real production process (chorizo production), applying the methodologies of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition.
Implement Blockchain technology for the tokenisation of emissions (issuance of CO2 tokens and CO2 absorption tokens), creating a secure and transparent platform for their exchange and neutralisation.
Research the potential of renewable energy sources (such as photovoltaic or hydrogen) and incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to optimise process efficiency and reduce energy consumption without affecting product quality.
Solution
Development of a comprehensive system based on 4 pillars: a Living Lab of the meat industry, emissions calculation, a blockchain traceability/tokenisation platform, and a study of renewable energies.
The solution transforms emissions into carbon tokens and offsets them with absorption tokens (clean energy), operating in an intermediary-free ecosystem.
At a transversal level, an intelligence module is integrated that optimises the efficiency of the production process, guaranteeing quality and advancing towards the goal of a circular and carbon-neutral industry.
