N0Waste agri-food sector Izertis

Izertis participates in the N0Waste project for the sustainability of the agri-food sector

Our firm, together with a consortium of companies and organisations from the food sector and the technology industry, is participating in the N0Waste project, which aims to research and apply new technologies to reduce and recover the waste generated in the supply of fresh and perishable food products.

Through the use of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Big Data, the N0Waste initiative aims to develop more sustainable, flexible and zero-defect food production processes, thus positioning the Basque Country as a benchmark technology provider for economic and environmental sustainability in the agri-food sector.

"The N0Waste project will reduce material losses along the entire food chain from packaging to perishable products, even reusing waste to create biofuels such as biohydrogen or biomethane", has highlighted Urko Larrañaga, our Lead of Blockchain.

The challenges the project will face also include increasing the level of transparency in the information consumers will receive on fresh products throughout the supply chain.

Our consultancy, thanks to its expertise in the blockchain area and the agri-food sector, will lead this work package favouring digitisation for traceability in logistics and last mile management of perishable products.

We will take advantage of the full potential of Blockchain technology to guarantee the quality and traceability of this perishable and premium product from its origin to its destination

N0Waste is an initiative that, financed by the Basque Government, arises in a context where, according to FAO data, a third of food production is lost before reaching the market, and up to 6 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established by the UN are directly related to this problem.

In addition to Izertis, the consortium includes companies with significant weight in the Basque economy such as Ondoan, EROSKI, Lointek, Orloga, Segula, Tecnipesa, Plastigaur, Udapa, Barrenetxe and Harakai, and has the support of the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Network Tecnalia, Ceit and the Basque Food Cluster.

In the case of Izertis, "we will take advantage of the full potential of Blockchain technology to guarantee the quality and traceability of this perishable and premium product from its origin to its destination, generating a digital passport of the products. The result of the project can be applied to the traceability of other food and industrial products", has mentioned Urko Larrañaga, Lead of Blockchain.

N0Waste is part of the RIS3 Euskadi Smart Specialisation Strategy and the Euskadi 2030 Science, Technology and Innovation Plan for Smart Industry. The project is funded by the Basque Government (ZE-2022/00041) through the HAZITEK 2022 programme, in the line of industrial research and experimental development projects in strategic sectors.
